Lady Midnight – In depth Review

Hi loves,

I have decided to do a book review for the a overwhelmingly anticipated ‘Lady Midnight’ by Cassandra Clare. This is the third series set in the Shadowhunter world (Shadowhunters are half human and half angel warriors). The first series was ‘The Mortal Instruments (TMI)’ the second was ‘The Infernal Devices (TID)’ and the new series is ‘The Dark Artifice(TDA)’. I recommend you read the other series before starting TDA because that way, it will make more sense to you, especially when there are references to events and characters from the other series. Cassandra Clare did mention that you can read TDA alone but it would be a richer/fuller experience if you were to read them all (Do it, they are brilliant!).

*(Post-finishing the book). I loved the book as you can imagine, I’m a die hard Cassandra Clare fan. She completely lived up to my expectations and has set the series up impeccably. When your favourite writer releases something new, there is always that small worry that it may not live up to their old work, but she did not disappoint! The characters are created simply and incredibly, you get to know them all as individuals. The plot is different, yet in line with the other series. The shadow world is as magical/cruel/brilliant/ fierce as ever.*

So basically, I want to do an in depth review. This will entail my thoughts/ramblings after each sitting of reading the book.  Also the book it nearly 700 pages long, and excited is the biggest understatement of the year (I like big books and I cannot lie).

Buckle up kids – its going to be a wild ride!

So I had my first sitting of Lady Midnight. I made myself a cup of tea and got ready to enter the shadow world. Mostly, in this chunk of the book you are reminded of what has been happening in the shadowhunter world (the dark war and the cold peace) since the last book of TMI. Which I think, is actually great because I read ‘City of Heavenly Fire’ when it first came out so it has been a rather long time.

So far, I am really enjoying getting to know the characters (Emma and Julian as well as the Blackthorn family). The book follows Emma and Julian but I was worried it would be confusing with all the Blackthorn children (because there are so many of them) but Cassie (because Cassandra Clare is too long and shes bae) is developing all of their characters making the story so much easier to follow. Love it so far. Also there a few mentions of the old favourites (Jace and Clary) which is great and I wish I could read more about them.

Okay, well, where do I begin. Still in awe of Cassie’s writing. I love that this book is set in L.A (It does not help with my intense desire to explore LA.). Anyway the first big event takes place in this section of the book. Its kind of heartbreaking (did not expect anything less).

Also Julian. JULIAN. Julian, he is painted as the most wonderful person. All you want to do is give him a hug and tell him it’s going to be okay.

Also DEMON FIGHTING  – I love reading action scenes and they are written so well. You, as a reader, manage to follow each person as they are fighting demons and it places the reader right in the middle of the action.(This is why I love reading books in third person).

I also love the pace at which the book is moving, trying to savour each word!

Firstly, WOAH! It’s getting very intense, and I’m absolutely loving it! Again JULIANNNN!! I think he has to be one of my favourites in the series, its just something about his character. Being so young with such a heavy responsibility, my heart feels for him.

There is not much more I can say that won’t spoil the book, but its sooo incredibly beautifully written. The story itself is a masterpiece. I have laughed, cried and this is only just beginning-middle.

I am finally starting to ship all my favourites. Ship SHIPS ships everywhere! (What is a ship and shipping?)

I will leave this section with my favourite quote by Mark Blackthorn..

“The box serves the Lord of lies”

(whilst talking about gaming/controller (P.s. I also love Mark’s character)

Page 342-491

So much has happened! Also you guys should know how difficult it is not scream about the book and give everything away! Anyway, what I loved about this section was EMMA AND JULIAN!!! Also EMMA AND CHRISTINA! I love girl power and Christina and Emma definitely display that.

I love Cassie because there are a couple of chapters that are like ‘throwbacks’ and some of our faves make appearances throughout those chapters!

I still get excited every time I pick the book up.

Soo.. my favourite quote from this section is …

“I hate being called a bitch”

BETRAYAL! A shadowhunter book is not complete without it. Blackthorns give me life. I have a lot of feelings and don’t know how to express them right now. *Internally screaming though*

The last hundred of so pages literally wrecked my heart. There is a complete plot twist! The ending is cruel in my opinion (reminds me a little of Will Herondale). I see why she had to finish the book like that, because it is a series. I cannot wait for the next book (only a year to wait *sits in a corner and cries*).

I gave the book 5/5 stars on goodreads.

P.s. Shoutout to my cousin Marvi who helped me take these pictures!

Hope you enjoyed it, let me know if you have read any of the Shadowhunter books.
